Marilyn Monroe was a movie star and sex symbol of the 1950s. This photograph is a still publicity shot from the 1955 movie, The Seven Year Itch, a typical comedy farce vehicle for Monroe.

This image, in which the actress stands over a real New York City sidewalk subway vent as a train rushes by underneath, caused a sensation and is perhaps the most well-known image of the blond bombshell and one of the most famous photos from the 1950s.
